Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Associate Degree Program - 78 Credits
As a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, you will provide diagnostic imaging for physicians to use in interpreting the results.
Sonography is the use of high-frequency sound waves to create images of organs, tissues or blood flow for evaluation and analysis. Your work will include examining areas of the body including the abdomen, breasts, thyroid, superficial tissues, a fetus, and male and female reproductive systems.
The role of a diagnostic medical sonographer is to:
- Take patient history
- Perform diagnostic procedures
- Analyze technical information
- Report findings to physician
- Give quality patient care
This focused degree teaches you how to recognize normal anatomy and pathology, use sonographic equipment including multi-dimensional imaging and Doppler techniques, and collaborate with other health team members.

Why STC: Clinical Experience
Before completing your Associate of Applied Science degree at STC, you will complete a seven-month clinical rotation at a medical center in the U.S. In addition, you will gain expertise in recognizing pathology and understanding related physiology, acquiring sonographic images, troubleshooting problems with sonographic equipment, and adapting exam protocols based on pathology or physiology variations. Accreditation: Southeast Technical College’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
Board Exams: Southeast Tech’s CAAHEP accreditation requires Diagnostic Medical Sonography students to take all related registry examinations before completion of the DMS program. You will receive the credential of Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer upon successful completion of the exams and program.
Hands-on Learning: The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program uses STC’s state-of-the-art sonography lab in the Sullivan Health Science Center to give you first-hand experience with today’s technology.
